Jobless man charged with murder of girlfriend

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 43-year-old man was charged at the Sessions Court today for the murder of his 30-year-old girlfriend.
Abd Khalid Md Isa was alleged to have murdered Rohani Hashim, 30, at a house No. 4183, Jalan Pengkalan Dato Keramat Bukit Tengah, Bukit Mertajam, between 4pm on Sept 29 and 6pm on Sept 30.
The unemployed accused said he understood the charge after it was read to him.
"Faham (understand)," he said loudly in the court room presided by Sessions Judge Musyiri Preet. No plea was recorded.
Abd Khalid, who was not represented, faces the mandatory death penalty if convicted.
Musyiri fixed Dec 15 for mention while DPP Lim Saw Sim appeared for the prosecution.
It was earlier reported that the charred remains of Rohani were found near a river bank here on Sept 30.
In a separate case, a 41-year-old woman claimed trial after she was charged with stabbing her daughter on the hand with a knife.
Rohaya Wan Puteh was alleged to have voluntarily cause hurt to her 16-year-old daughter at the Taman Rumia flats in Machang Bubok around 7pm on Oct 12.
The offence provides for a maximum three years in prison, with fine, or with whipping, or with any two such punishments if convicted.
Musyiri fixed bail at RM5,000 in one surety and set Nov 13 for mention pending submission of documents.
Rafael Abdullah appeared for Rohaya while Lim appeared for the prosecution.
