83 suspected drug addicts detained in raid

    KEPALA BATAS: Police detained 83 men including three foreigners, believed to be drug addicts, during a seven-hour morning raid in northern Seberang Prai district today.
    The foreigners were believed to be from Thailand and Pakistan.
    Penang Narcotic chief Supt Guan Beng Kang said in the Ops Bersepadu Mutiara integrated operation held from 4am to 11am police uncovered four drug addict hot spots in Kuala Muda, Penang Tunggal, Bakau Tua and also Kuala Bekah in the northern Seberang Prai district.
    "Two marine police boats were also deployed, should the suspects attempt to escape by jumping into the river nearby", he told reporters after the operation.
    He said syabu and heroin were found in possession of the drug addicts and police are still determining the amount of the confiscated drug from the operation.
    "There is one incident where one of the suspects jumped into the river to escape being arrested by the police but he was caught by the marine police team who were in the operation",he said.
    Guan said the addicts, aged between 30 and 50, were brought to the northern Seberang Prai district headquarters for further investigations.
    The operation saw a joint task-force between Criminal Investigation Department (CID) from police contingent headquarters, CID from northern Seberang Prai headquarters , Bukit Aman's Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING).National Drug Agency (AADK) and also Marine police team.
