PETALING JAYA: Malaysia appreciates the cooperation from the US for its support of a resolution before the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council on the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 that was shot down.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pix) said a meeting was held on Oct 24 in Washington DC with US Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx to solidify both countries' stand to work together on improving aviation security.
Liow in a statement said that ICAO Resolution reaffirms the need for all countries to comply with international law that prohibits acts of violence that pose threats to safety of international civil aviation.
He added that the resolution also stresses the importance of nations in assisting with the continuation and finalisation of a thorough and independent investigation into the incident.
"In light of these tragedies, it is clear that the international community must collaborate closely and take greater steps towards improving safety and security in civil aviation," he said.
Liow said he will attending the 203rd Session of the ICAO Council at Montreal next week to address the issue.
"Malaysia intends to present its views and input to the ICAO Council, with a view towards seeking consensus on this matter," he said.
"Among the matter I will put forward to ICAO Council include the need to improve aircraft tracking by implementing real-time tracking as well as the need for sharing of information pertaining to flight risks," he added.
Flight MH17 was travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17 when it was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 passengers and crew onboard.
