GEORGE TOWN: Penang plans to enter the high end computing sector of cloud computing, big data analytics (BDA) and the Internet of Things (IOT) by upgrading its broadband infrastructure.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said ensuring broadband services was available widely was critical to not lose out to other areas which may have faster networks.
He said local government, traffic management and flood mitigation committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow has been appointed the "broadband Czar" to resolve issues on installing broadband infrastructure.
He said Chow was chosen since establishing infrastructure, like laying cables, were under the purview of the government which issued planning approvals.
He acknowledged that telcos had approached the state to express their interest on broadband matters but said the administration wanted an industry-wide approach.
"The state government feels that it needs to move quickly on this or it will be challenging to attract investors in the future," he said at a post-Exco meeting press conference today.
