KUALA LUMPUR: A senior federal police officer was held by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) on Sunday for allegedly accepting large amounts of bribes.
It is learnt that on arresting him, the MACC recovered tens of thousands of ringgit from the officer who holds the rank of assistant commissioner of police (ACP).
Sources said the cash was recovered from several places, including the officer's workplace and home.
The MACC has placed him under its scrutiny for months after receiving information on alleged kickbacks involving the police and vice dens.
The senior police officer is believed to be the highest-ranking police officer to be held by the MACC for alleged graft. He is currently in MACC's custody under a remand order.
Acting Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun confirmed the officer's arrest but declined to elaborate.
Since early this year, the police force, especially units that have illegal gambling and vice under its watch, had come under the radar of the MACC for allegedly turning a blind eye to such shady activities operating in broad daylight.
The MACC had in the past months hauled up several dozen police personnel, including officer over similar allegations.
