KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya University College of Hospitality was today urged to set up a School of Needlework as part of the university.
Crown Princess of Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, who is well-known for her work in the preservation of the woven silk fabric trademarked as the "Tenun Pahang Diraja", made the call after her appointment as the university's chancellor.
"I am greatly honoured and deeply humbled with this appointment. As your new chancellor, I would like to be more hands-on with the development of the university, especially since cooking and needlework are my passion," she said in her speech at the university's third convocation ceremony at Berjaya Times Square here.
"I would like to propose for a School of Needlework to be established as part of the university. This would help us cultivate and preserve the fine art of needlework," she added.
Witnessing the School of Needlework in London on one of her trips there inspired her to want to start a similar establishment here in Malaysia, to protect some of our heritage needlework.
Tunku Azizah also authored a cookbook on Pahang's traditional cooking, aptly titled "Air Tangan Puan Pahang & Masakan Tradisional Pahang".
She is also known for her Tunku Azizah Fertility Foundation (TAFF), set up in 2004, which, since its establishment, has changed the lives of numerous couples in Malaysia to have babies.
The inaugural appointment was witnessed by Berjaya Corporation Berhad (BCorp) chairman and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Robin Tan and the university's vice-chancellor Dominic John Szambowski.
