Floods wreak havoc in Terengganu

KUALA NERUS: Terengganu police have mobilised 3,428 officers and personnel to assist and control situations at flooded areas in the state.
Terengganu police chief Datuk Jamshah Mustapa said police were working closely with other agencies involved in the rescue and evacuation operations of flood victims.
He said police have also alerted all district police chiefs to conduct patrol and monitoring at flood-prone areas in their respective districts.
"We are on full alert with all equipment and logistics ready to face any eventuality," he told reporters after visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan Kompleks Gong Badak here today.
A Form One student in Setiu became the first flood fatality in Terengganu since floods began Monday.
In KUALA TERENGGANU, several main roads in three districts in the state were closed to traffic after being inundated by 0.3 to one metre of water.
A Terengganu Works Department (JKR) operations spokesman said Kuala Terengganu was the worst district affected where five roads were closed as of 3pm today.
"The roads are the junction to Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Jalan Kubang Tangga, Jalan Bukit Berangan-Bukit Nenas, the main road near Hock Kee Seng supermarket and the road from Gong Badak to Tok Jembal.
"Jalan Pantai from Pak Tuyu to Batu Rakit is also closed since early this morning when a section of the road collapsed due to ground water movement," he said.
In Marang, the ramp to enter the East Coast Highway at Bukit Pyong was closed to all traffic when it was inundated by 0.4m of water.
The road from Kuala Berang to Sungai Tong near Kampung Kuala Ping, Hulu Terengganu was also closed to all traffic due to the floods.
Meanwhile, Terengganu state JKR director Datuk Shafii Mohamad said the department was monitoring all the main roads in the state and were also repairing those that were badly damaged.
"The people are also advised to observe all signages on alternative routes in the areas," he told reporters today.

In KUALA NERUS, the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Padang Kemunting here was closed after the main road to the school was cut off due to rising water level.
Terengganu State Education director Zakaria Hussin said more than 100 SPM candidates at the examination centre now have to sit for the examination at SMK Tengku Mizan Zainal Abidin located near the school.
"We have to change the examination centre to SMK Tengku Mizan Zainal Abidin to facilitate candidates from other examination centres. We hope the examination ending on Dec 3 will proceed smoothly," he said.
A total of 21,754 candidates will be sitting for the SPM at 183 examination centres in Terengganu. – Bernama
