Nigerian sweet-talkers nabbed over RM1m in scams

GEORGE TOWN: Four Nigerians, assisted by a Malaysian woman and an Indonesian woman, managed to sweet talk their way to some RM1.1million in ill gotten gains beginning this year.
The men befriended their victims on social media networks before convincing them to hand over cash, jewellery and other valuable items.
The two women in cahoots with them would then collect the loot from the victims to deter suspicion.
Their activities came to an end when police detained all of them, aged in their 20s and 30s, during an operation at Kuala Lumpur and Relau on Nov 20 and Nov 21 respectively.
Penang Commercial Crime chief ACP Azmi Adam said investigations showed their victims were mostly housewives.
He said the men would coax the victims to hand over the valuables while the women would collect them.
He said police got wind of their scamming activities when reports were lodged over the losses.
"We urged others who have the same experience to lodge police reports," he said in a press conference today.
All six have been remanded until Dec 4 to assist investigations for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.
