KUALA LUMPUR: Though her strides may be slower and her posture may have deteriorated, old age did not dampen the spirit of Umno veteran Datuk Siti Rahmah Kassim from attending the Umno General Assembly 2014 which enters its second day today.
The presence of the 89-year-old Umno activist at Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here was announced by Umno permanent chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruldin which prompted the delegates present to stand up in her honour.
Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and several top party leaders left their seats on stage at the hall to greet and shake Siti Rahmah's hand.
In fact, Badruddin too left his seat to greet her and kiss her hand.
Siti Rahmah was the first person to give contribution to the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra when she handed over her beloved gold bracelet to sponsor the second Umno president's trip to London to negotiate for the country's independence.
Siti Rahmah was thrown into politics at the early age of 19 and was the first woman to contest in the general election in 1959, and won the Terentang state constituency seat in Negri Sembilan which she held for two terms before retiring as an assemblyman in 1964. – Bernama
