KUALA LUMPUR: The role and initiatives of the government-linked companies (GLCs) in helping Malay and Bumiputera professionals and entrepreneurs were again raised in the debate at the 2014 Umno General Assembly today.
A Kedah delegate, Datuk Abdullah Hasnan Kamaruddin had asked to what extent the GLC, which plays an important role in raising the socio-economic status of the Bumiputera, had been successful in presenting its annual report card on efforts to drive the empowerment of Bumiputera entrepreneurs.
"Kedah proposes that GLCs such as UDA (Urban Development Corporation) prepares a report card on how many Bumiputera it has guided and developed," he said when debating the motion on the economy at the assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre, here.
He noted that the Malays were still facing the problem of poverty, including unemployment among graduates where 47% of the graduates were still without jobs between 2008 and 2012.
The issue on the role of the GLCs which were raised during the previous assemblies had received the attention of Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak in his winding-up speech at the Umno assembly last December where he had given an assurance that he would always monitor the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) of the chief executive officer of the GLC in implementing the Bumiputera Empowerment Agenda.
Abdullah Hasnan also raised the aspect of savings among the Malays and bumiputera, such as in the Tabung Haji and the Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB), which were still low.
"Kedah also proposes that the government creates a one-stop centre at the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's Department to study methods in helping to eradicate poverty," he said. – Bernama
