KUALA LUMPUR: The allegations by certain quarters that the government's decision to retain and improve the Sedition Act 1948 was to suppress freedom of speech was refuted by Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
The Negeri Sembilan Mentri Besar called on the people to understand clearly that the decision was made to preserve stability and harmony in the country.
"We must take preventive measures before it's too late and this is the only act that will protect and save our country." he told Bernama outside the Umno General Assembly here today.
He said the act was also applicable to everyone, and not directed particularly to the opposition, but also to Umno members and ministers, and that national security cannot be compromised.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Abdul Razak, who is also Umno president, announced that the Sedition Act is retained with improvements made to it to ensure the country's harmony. – Bernama
