KUALA LUMPUR: The government is providing an initial grant of RM5 million to the Indus Education Foundation (IEF), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak who launched the foundation today.
Describing it as a timely and essential vehicle, he said, the IEF would support deserving Indian students pursuing tertiary education.
This, he said, was another example of a promise to the people fulfilled.
"We promised to set up a scholarship fund to assist Indian students at the tertiary level and today, we've been able to deliver on that promise with this public-private partnership," he said when launching the foundation in Sentul, here.
Present was IEF chairman Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam. Najib hoped that IEF would play its role well to assist talented and eligible Malaysian Indian students from middle and low-income families.
The prime minister noted that the youth of today needed to take time to understand and think deeply in making decisions about all the education options available to them, after finishing school.
He said the special cabinet committee on Indian affairs chaired by him had been coordinating efforts to fulfill the promises made by focusing on social, educational, employment and economic opportunities and challenges faced by the Indian community. – Bernama
