KUALA LUMPUR: Philately is very much alive in Malaysia.
Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM) Datuk Jaulani Johari said that Malaysia hosting the 29th Asian International Stamp Exhibition together with the 2014 World Youth Stamp Exhibition (KLwyse) is living testimony of the fact that philately is thriving in Malaysia.
"It is a great honour for us to host these two exhibitions in one go and we hope to spread to the youth especially an appreciation of the arts, culture and heritage embodied in the humble postage stamp," he said before stamping a giant replica of a stamp to mark the opening of the world's biggest philatelic exhibition event at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today.
"Collecting stamps preserves the heritage of mankind and acts as a storage for social memory. There are more than 200 million stamp collectors worldwide and Malaysia, like most counties, has a staunch philatelic community," he added.
KLwyse is organised by the ministry, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Philatelic Society of Malaysia (PSM) and Pos Malaysia with patronage of Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP) and Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP).
Admission is free.
To commemorate the hosting of the exhibitions, Pos Malaysia is issuing a series of special stamps (miniature sheets).
The themes of the sheets are Heritage Building, 160th Year of Postage Stamp Usage in Malaysia, Flora, Fauna, Cultural Dance and Malay Folk Stories on Dec 1, Dec 2, Dec 3, Dec 4, Dec 5 and Dec 6 respectively.
