PRESENTED in February at Barcelona's MWC 2014, the surprisingly original YotaPhone 2 is finally available in Europe and the UK.
This Android smartphone from Russian brand Yota Devices has screens on both sides, one of which uses e-ink to take battery life above 100 hours in reading mode.
Located on what would normally be the "back" of the device, the 4.7-inch e-ink panel is capable of displaying alerts and widgets (stock prices, weather, social networks, etc.) in 16 shades of grey, all without waking up the more power-hungry primary screen.
Naturally, this feature also allows the smartphone to double as an e-reader.
The highest resolution camera on the YotaPhone 2 is on the back, meaning that selfie takers may have the unusual experience of previewing their shots in greyscale.
The use of e-ink has two primary advantages. Firstly, it ensures perfect readability under any circumstances, even in direct sunlight.
But more importantly for eco-conscious users, it significantly reduces the drain on battery life. This enables the YotaPhone 2 to offer up to five days of reading time (over 100 hours) or 24 hours of 4G web browsing.
On the reverse side, the YotaPhone 2 features a five-inch Full HD AMOLED screen.
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor powers the device, which is 4G and NFC compatible.
The YotaPhone 2 is available to order in the UK for £555 (US$863) and in Europe for €699 (US$858).
Yota Devices plans to bring the smartphone to Asian markets in Q1 2015 and to the US, Canada and Latin America in the following months.
The first YotaPhone, though less sophisticated than this latest device, was making headlines as early as January 2013 at CES in Las Vegas.
