Celebrating others in its success

IN conjunction with its 40th anniversary celebration, Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM) engaged in community service through its Insurans Hayat Cares platform. Its intention was to raise awareness for cancer and cancer education. At its anniversary dinner, LIAM president Vincent Kwo presented a grant of RM50,000 to Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) chief executive Prof Dr Teo Soo Hwang. The cheque presentation was witnessed by Bank Negara Malaysia deputy governor Datuk Muhammad Ibrahim.
At the event, a booklet about cancer titled "Be Frank" was unveiled. The booklet was a community service initiative that was helmed by the Insurans Hayat Cares platform, under LIAM. The endeavour was part of its cancer research and awareness programme, which it undertook in collaboration with CARIF. The booklet highlights the top five cancers among men and women in the country and includes information on preventive measures.
Kwo revealed that through the booklet, LIAM hopes to "play a more engaging role within the community, by promoting cancer education among its member companies at LIAM events, as well as the general public". He said that LIAM aims to distribute 50,000 copies of the multilingual booklet to the general public.
Inspired by Frank Chong, a 35- year-old cancer survivor who beat the odds against the disease inflicted upon him at the age of 11; LIAM hopes that Chong's story, which is in the booklet, will inspire cancer patients and their families to acquire the same courage he had.
The title which incorporates the word "Frank" relates to Chong, at the same time, connotes being frank, meant to encourage Malaysians to be more open about cancer and dispel the myths around the disease. Besides information on the disease, the booklet also includes inspirational messages from other cancer survivors.
LIAM has played an active role in giving back to the community via its Life Insurance Day. Its noble endeavours since 1991, has helped the underprivileged and the needy. This year, LIAM resolved to take its efforts to the next level, through the launch of its Insurans Hayat Cares community service platform, along with the launch of the informative and inspirational booklet.
