Traffic cops on graft war

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal traffic police today declared all-out war against corruption among road users and traffic police personnel, vowing to bring to book both giver and taker.
Federal traffic police chief SAC Datuk Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said efforts are being taken to eradicate graft at all levels of the traffic police branch.
"It is a concerted effort. When there are no givers, takers will not exist. We advise the public to refrain from offering bribes to our traffic police personnel. We will take stern action against them if they are caught doing so. Likewise, if the public find our personnel demanding kickbacks, please report them to the authorities or lodge reports against them at any police station. Regardless of their rank, we will not spare anyone if they are found to be on the take," he told a press conference at Bukit Aman today.
He said the public may lodge their complaints of graft with the Integrated Public Agency Complaints Monitoring System (i-SPAAA) by calling its toll-free line at 1800880222 or email it to the police at rmp.spab.gov.my or ispaaaapdrm@rmp.gov.my
Mohd Fuad also presented commendation certificates to two young traffic policemen, Lance Corporal Mohd Farid Amran and Mohd Syazwan Zulkapkli of the federal police highway patrol unit, who turned down a bribe offered by a foreign motorist recently.
On another matter, Mohd Fuad said inconsiderate motorists who drive or leave their vehicles on emergency lanes of roads are among the main culprits behind road accident fatalities.
He said police have come down hard on such drivers and close to 43,000 summonses were issued against them between 2011 and November this year for offences related to the unlawful use of emergency lanes.
