MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has banned web-based taxi services in the western Indian state in the wake of the rape of a 27-year-old woman by a driver employed with US-based Uber taxi firm in Delhi last week.
"The Transport Commissioner has been instructed to stop all web-based cab booking services with immediate effect," Transport Secretary S K Sharma told Press Trust of India (PTI) on Wednesday.
Last Friday night, a woman working for a finance company in Gurgaon booked a taxi from Uber to return to her home in north Delhi's Inderlok area.
She was allegedly sexually assaulted by thirty-two-year-old driver Shiv Kumar Yadav at an isolated place.
The Delhi government has banned Uber and all other internet-based taxi booking services that did not receive regulatory approval from transport authorities. – Bernama
