GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng should refer to the mufti and ulama before issuing statements on Islamic matters to avoid creating public confusion and disunity.
Penang Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma) information chief, Mohamed Rashid Nagore Meerah said as a leader for all communities in the state, Lim should choose a respectful approach in giving his views to ensure harmony in society.
"This is also to avoid factual errors," he said in a statement, here, today.
Last Friday, several news portals carried Lim's statement which permitted non-Muslims in Penang to use the word "Allah".
He had also reportedly said that the prohibition on non-Muslims to use the "Allah" word as spelled out in the Penang Islamic Administration Enactment 2004 was not applicable to non-Muslims, but only to Muslims.
Mohamed Rashid said Kimma had lodged a police report yesterday on Lim's controversial statement and urged police to investigate it from all angles. Bernama
