Kurup: Do not give space to extremists

KUALA LUMPUR: The media should not give space to extremist groups or spread racial issues and those which touch on religious sensitivities.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said the cooperation of the media is needed to help the government achieve its objectives and aspirations in national unity at the grassroots level to preserve stability and peace.
"There is an inclination by some media to publish negative things which causes instability, spreads hatred and arouses the anger of the people towards the government, leaders or certain parties."
Kurup was speaking at a dinner organised by the National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) here last night.
Efforts towards unity should not be placed on the government alone but be borne by the media so that the unity message could be relayed effectively.
He also announced that the JPNIN would create the Outstanding Unity Award in appreciation for articles which highlighted national unity and integration issues in the mass media. – Bernama
