KUALA LUMPUR: Police detained a 39-year-old man at the KL International Airport on Wednesday as he attempted to leave the country to join Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the man was arrested by officers from the Special Branch counter terrorism unit.
He was planning to board a flight to Brunei and then fly to Turkey before heading for Syria, Khalid added.
"With the latest arrest, we have detained 46 Malaysians who were planning to join IS in Syria. The figure includes those who were recruiting members," said Khalid after launching the 59th anniversary celebrations of the Federal Police Reserve Unit today.
Khalid warned those planning to use Malaysia as a transit point to head for Syria to drop such plans as the police would act immediately against them, especially if the country's safety and people are threatened.
He said Malaysia is being frequently used as a transit point by IS members because it has high-end transportation and technologies as well as user-friendly accommodation.
"We have to always be cautious of members of this group as our country practises an open policy," he added.
