KUALA LUMPUR: Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib today launched the Kuala Lumpur Tour Ambassador Program and Kuala Lumpur Tourist Guidebook — two initiatives that will help ensure all visitors have easy access and accurate information about the city.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) introduced these initiatives together with its partners 1Malaysia 4 Youth (1M4U) and the KL Tourist Guides Association.
The tour ambassador programme is the first tourism initiative where some 40 ambassadors comprising locals and foreigners from Yemen, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Pakistan will become city representatives and will showcase the best of what the city has to offer.
"We have seen similar successes of this programme in cities like Melbourne, Vancouver, Berlin and Hong Kong. We hope to replicate that success here in Kuala Lumpur," he said.
The 40 selected ambassadors consist of working adults and students who will serve from between three to six months and will get to participate in a wide variety of city tourism initiatives.
The tourism ambassadors will be identifiable in the city through their red vest, white cap and "Visit KL" bag.
In a surprising move, Ahmad Phesal announced that DBKL will be paying the volunteers RM400 a month for their excellent services to the city.
The second tourism initiative is the KL tourist guidebook which was also launched by the mayor at the ceremony today.
The guidebook will improve the reach of information to tourists by way of the ambassadors.
The guidebook is the first of its kind in Malaysia to specifically target tourist guides, and will offer comprehensive information about Kuala Lumpur's tourism offerings and attractions.
