PETALING JAYA: PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his disappointment over the warrant issued by Interpol for the arrest of Islamic cleric Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi recently.
In a press statement, Anwar also expressed regret over the move made by Egypt President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in calling for the arrest on a venerated scholar who is admired by the Islamic world.
"I call on Interpol to pull back the notice issued against Yusuf as this clearly is a baseless act, and Interpol is seen as being 'used' by a cruel dictator (Abdel Fattah)," he claimed.
He said the Muslim community is surprised that Interpol has issued an arrest warrant over Yusuf's alleged involvement with the Ikhwanul Muslimin activists in Egypt.
Interpol reportedly stated that Yusuf is also wanted by Egypt's judicial authorities for allegedly facilitating a prison escape and committing premeditated murder, among others.
