PASIR MAS: A pregnant woman, along with her son, went against all odds to get to higher ground after her house in Kampung Kedap, Rantau Panjang was flooded last Thursday.

Reiterating the frightful moment, Norasmawati Wahab, 27, said she had no choice but to brave the floods to find a safer place after water levels had reached her waist, all while carrying her two-year old son Mohd Danish Ashraf Mizi.

Shortly after venturing out of her house, she and her son managed to get on a public boat which happened to be passing by in the area and travelled to the main road before braving the floodwaters on the main road for another kilometre to the relief centre while carrying her son, she told reporters when met at the temporary relief centre in Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Gual Tinggi here, yesterday.

Norasmawati said during the incident, her husband Mizi Abdul Rahman, 32, was working outside of Kelantan and could not return home.

"It was a frightening experience for sure. I was worried if anything would happen to my baby as I was already almost due and at one point my legs cramped. Thank God I survived...when I arrived at the SK Rantau Panjang 2 relief centre, firemen transferred me to to SK Gual Tinggi to receive treatment," she said.

After four days at the relief centre, Norasmawati gave birth to her second child, a boy weighing 3.3kg at 11pm, at the Lati Hospital on Monday after feeling contractions at 10am in the morning.

She described the floods this time as the worst ever, but also thanked all those who had helped her out. She is currently nursing her child at the SK Gual Tinggi relief centre. – Bernama
