Medical aid on the way

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has mobilised its MMA Volunteer Corp (MMA VOC) to help flood victims in the five affected states.
The MMA VOC which is comprised of doctors and medical students will provide medical assistance needed to victims of flood.
MMA president Dr H Krishna Kumar said they were saddened by the flood disaster which had resulted in more than 200,000 Malaysians having to be displaced from their homes.
"The MMA has agreed to send RM20,000 to Kelantan, RM10,000 to Terengganu and RM5,000 to the other 5 affected states," he said. The MMA VOC has been given RM100,000 to carry out their volunteer activities.
Meanwhile, the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur has put together a collection of items to send to the victims.
This includes two lorry loads of bed sheets, towels and duvet covers, bathrobes, soaps, toothbrushes, 200 pairs of school shoes, school bags, books, toys, used clothing, shampoo and hair conditioner.
The hotel's general manager, Manfred Weber, handed the items to Malaysian Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (MVFRA) founder and chairman K. Balasupramaniam on Friday.
The items which were loaded on MVFRA truck will make its way to Pahang and Terengganu to deliver them directly to flood victims in shelters where they have been evacuated.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) has agreed to reschedule its students' final examination which was scheduled to start today to another date due to the flood situation.
Its deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International), Prof Datuk Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said the decision to postpone the examination was made because many of its students who had returned to their homes in the East Coast states were still stranded due to the floods.
"We will hold the examination when the situation has returned to normal," he said.
"They should not be unduly worried about the rescheduled final exam but to focus on their safety and their family's back home," he added.
