KUALA LUMPUR: The People's Republic of China will be sending aid to help Malaysia in flood-recovery efforts.
The Chinese government is contributing 2,950 tents, 220 power generators, 400 water pumps, 45 water hoses and 60 water purification units to help those affected.
Some of the items arrived in Malaysia on Monday on two special flights from China. The rest of the items are scheduled to arrive by the end of the week.
In addition, the Chinese government will also provide 400 units of temporary houses and these will be delivered as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said the items will be delivered in three phases.
"On behalf of the government and the Malaysian people, especially those who are affected by the floods, I would like to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to the Chinese government and its president, Xi Jinping, for their considerate and kind gesture in providing us with assistance," Najib said at the aid handover ceremony in Wisma Perwira.
"The contribution is a clear manifestation of the warm ties that we have fostered," Najib said.
The items will be utilised by those who lost their houses, including those in Manek Urai, PLKN camps and Wataniah camps in Kelantan.
Chinese ambassador to Malaysia, Huang Huikang, said the Chinese people sympathise with those affected by the flood.
In the spirit of friendship, the Chinese government has decided to lend its hand to ease the burden of Malaysia in facing the disaster, he said.
"Our relationship is so strong that we cannot just leave Malaysians to deal with this alone," Huang said.
He added the donation is a token of the friendship between the two countries and gave the assurance that China will provide further assistance if requested by Malaysia.
"If the Malaysian government has further needs, we will provide more. We are family, we are brothers, we will help each other and stand together for the benefit of the people," Huang said.
