Hearing for Aminul's shooting adjourned

SHAH ALAM: The High Court today adjourned the hearing of a civil suit filed by the family of 15-year-old schoolboy Aminulrasyid Amzah, who was shot dead by the police about five years ago, for the parties to explore the possibility of a mediation.
The suit was filed by the deceased's mother, Norsiah Mohamad, 66, and his sister, Nor Azura Amzah, 45, in April, 2013.
It was fixed for a hearing yesterday and Norsiah was expected to testify but hearing was adjourned.
Lawyer N.Surendran, who represented the family, told reporters after the case that the hearing was adjourned in order for the parties to explore the possibilities of mediation.
"We don't want to put the family through this," said Surendran, adding the family was still traumatised by the incident.
Surendran hoped the police and the government would agree to an "admission of liability" rather than going through the trial.
He said if mediation fails, then hearing would proceed on Feb 25 and Feb 26, 2015.
In the suit, the deceased's family named Corporal Jenain Subi, Shah Alam district police chief, former Selangor police chief, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, the then Inspector-General of Police, and the government of Malaysia as defendants.
Lawyer Zulkepli Omar represented Jenain while Senior Federal Counsel Normastura Ayub represented the four other defendants.
Aminul was allegedly shot in a high-speed car chase at about 2am on April 26, 2010. Jenain, who was charged and sentenced to five years jail by the Sessions Court was acquitted on appeal to the High Court in 2012, after it held that Jenain did not have the intention to cause Aminulrasyid's death and that the shots at the car driven by the teenager, was to immobilise the vehicle.
The Appeal Court upheld the High Court decision to acquit and discharge Jenain.
