KUALA LUMPUR: Snatch theft cases reported in Kuala Lumpur last year had dramatically shot up to almost triple the number recorded in 2013.
Kuala Lumpur police chief senior DCP Datuk Tajudin Md Isa said today 632 cases were reported last year compared to 214 cases in 2013.
He said efforts are being made by city police to ensure snatch theft cases are brought down this year.
However, he said there was a decline in overall crime statistics last year, with 23,758 cases reported compared to 20,940 in 2013.
Tajudin said among the goals of city police this year is to come down hard on those involved in gangsterism, gambling and prostitution.
He also warned that he will not hesitate to take severe action against his personnel if they are involved in undesirable activities and other disciplinary issues.
Today, former Dang Wang police chief SAC Zainuddin Ahmad took over as the new Kuala Lumpur CID chief.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that police have detained two men who allegedly used a rented house in Chow Kit as a drug laboratory to process methamphetamine.
During a raid on Jan 14, a police team also seized an assortment of drugs worth about RM150,000 from the house in Lorong Haji Taib 1 about 10.30pm.
Tajudin said the drugs comprised 1kg of crystal-like substance believed to be syabu, 12 tubes of heroin and several drug-making paraphernalia and chemicals used to process methamphetamine.
He told a press conference today that the suspects, aged 42 and 50, tested positive for methamphetamine.
The duo have been remanded for seven days, beginning Jan 15, to facilitate investigations under Section (39B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
