BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police seized 90kgs of marijuana (ganja) worth RM300,000 from a car parked by the roadside on Monday.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the contraband was found inside the car in Kubang Semang, near here, about 8.30pm.
Police went to check the vehicle following a tip off and found 90 blocks of the compressed leaves inside it, he added.
He said police raided a house and detained an unemployed 28-year-old man at Tanah Liat here during a follow up operation five hours later.
They seized a car key, two mobile phones and a high-powered motorcycle at the house, he added.
"The suspect is believed to have left the car by the road for the past six days to avoid police roadblocks for crime prevention," he told a press conference yesterday.
Abdul Rahim said checks showed the vehicle bore false registration plates as its chassis number did not tally with the numbers on record.
He said police believe the suspect was acting alone and had been active in the district for around five months.
He said the suspect has been remanded until Jan 27 to assist investigations under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death penalty on conviction.
