MCA Youth set up anti-hudud committee

KUALA LUMPUR: An "anti-implementation of hudud law" committee has been set up by MCA to monitor developments on the Hudud Bill, to be tabled in Kelantan this year.
Its youth chief Chong Sin Woon said the committee, to be chaired by MCA Youth treasurer-general Lee Beng Seng, is also to create awareness among non-Muslims on two major concerns — that it will affect everyone (including non-Muslims), and that it may become national law.
"All this while, we were made to believe that it will only affect Muslims and that non-Muslims will not be affected. This is untrue because once the bill is enacted, it will affect everyone regardless of whether or not you are Muslim," said Chong.
He added that if the bill is implemented in Kelantan, there is a high possibility that it will also be implemented in other states such as Perlis, Kedah, Selangor, Pahang and Negri Sembilan.
"Hence, when the majority of states implement it, it will eventually become national law," Chong said after chairing the MCA National Youth Central Committee meeting at the party headquarters today.
He urged those who support moderation and those against hudud law to voice their stand instead of remaining silent.
On the MCA Youth wing, Chong said they have already revamped and reshuffled its bureau leadership, apart from setting up new central committee bureaus.
"The move is to further strengthen implementation of the party's policies at the bureaus," he said, adding that they have initiated a series of activities and programmes to commemorate MCA Youth's 60th anniversary this year, instead of having a grand-scale celebration.
"I would like all youth members to reflect on and restudy the party's struggle and history, and come up with ways on how and what we can do (to serve) the people and the nation.
"At the same time, I would also like members to come up with ways on how we can help with rebuilding the party," Chong said.
On the suspension of the National Service programme, Chong said MCA would give its views and opinion on how to revamp the programme.
"We will ask for it to emphasise on national harmony, national unity and integration among races as it is a good platform for everyone to come together to instil the spirit of harmony among all races," he added.
