GEORGE TOWN: Police detained 33 men at an entertainment outlet on Sunday during an anti-crime operation.
Penang deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said all of them were detained during the 2.55am operation, following a tip-off.
He said police also seized helmets and sticks adding that all of them were aged between 17 and 28.
He said checks show many of them possess previous criminal records for drug related offences.
"They are being remanded until Jan 29," he said, adding that investigators were probing if those detained had triad links.
The case is being investigated under the Penal Code for possession of weapons or missiles, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.
On the upcoming Thaipusam festival, Thaiveegan said police will not hesitate to take action against disruptive or unruly behaviour.
He said 1,000 policemen would be deployed for four days beginning Feb 1 to ensure the peace is kept.
"We want to ensure the celebrations are harmonious and peaceful," he said.
