MIC president and deputy to 'stand down' to resolve crisis
KUALA LUMPUR: MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam today said all party members had unanimously agreed to observe a moratorium to enable Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to resolve the crisis.
He said the members have agreed to be calm until Najib resolves the problem.
The moratorium was announced by party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel today.
"I have earlier highlighted to the prime minister on the need to resolve the issue of who will run MIC in the interim period. The Registrar of Societies (ROS) has clearly stated that the election of the central working committee (CWC) members in December 2013 is not legitimate," he told a press conference at a hotel here today after meeting with some party members.
"The ROS has also stated that it could not recognise any appointment like the secretary-general's post until the election issue is completely resolved." he said.
Subramaniam also said that 90 division leaders who met on Jan 24 have resolved that the CWC members who were elected in 2009 should administer the party in the interim period.
"Resolving this issue (administering the party in the interim) will be the focus in determining the effectiveness of the moratorium," he added.
Subramaniam also gave an assurance that the prime minister is aware of the crisis in the party MIC and his intentions to mediate should be respected.
