PETALING JAYA: Former MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu (pix) said he will not interfere in the crisis in the party as it is beyond his capacity.
The veteran politician said he will leave it to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, who is also the Barisan Nasional chairman, to resolve the matter.
"I do not wish to interfere (in the conflict). I am an outsider now and just a normal party member," he said.
He said the issue may escalate into a big affair if he interfered.
"I will just keep quiet as the prime minister is looking into it. If he tells me to have a discussion with the MIC leadership, I will do so," he told reporters when met after attending the 9th International Conference of Tamil Studies at Universiti Malaya today.
The event, which Najib officiated at, was also attended by Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan and Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk M. Saravanan.
Despite the growing tension within the party, Samy Vellu said he is confident that the issue would be resolved amicably.
"I pray to God that the misunderstanding can be resolved and they will cooperate again," he said, while cautioning that the conflict would not be beneficial to the Indian community in the country.
"Politicians should think about the community first rather than who should be in power," he said.
He also said the conflict should not be seen as a representation of the view of the Indian community as a whole.
