PUTRAJAYA: Fresh elections for all office bearers in the MIC must be conducted starting April to July 2015 to avoid deregistration.
Speaking to reporters in a press conference here today, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Home Ministry and Registrar of Societies (RoS), being the bodies responsible for addressing the MIC crisis, have decided to request the party to follow the instructions as stated in the Societies Act 1966 Section 3A to solve the crisis.
"The RoS highlighted to me the complaints they received regarding the illegal branches in the 2013 MIC elections.
"Thus, the RoS has instructed MIC to conduct fresh polls for all the office bearers, namely the branches, divisions, Wanita and Youth wings, central working committee (CWC), vice-presidents, deputy president and the president," he said.
Fresh polls for divisions are scheduled to be conducted in April 2015, Presidential election in May 2015 and divisional elections in June 2015.
Fresh elections for the Wanita and Youth wings are to be conducted from April to June 2015 while the central working committee (CWC), deputy and vice-presidents elections are scheduled to be conducted in July 2015.
Meanwhile, Zahid also stated that the CWC elected in 2009 will have to act as the interim CWC until the fresh election is completed.
"These interim CWC members have been instructed to form a committee to handle the fresh elections process. The legal branches or only the legitimate branches per 2012 can be used or are qualified for the fresh elections," he added.
Zahid cautioned, that if the MIC fails to follow the instructions given by the RoS, the party will be dissolved in accordance to the Societies Act 1966, Section 13.
The MIC crisis was triggered when the RoS on Dec 5 last year, nullified the election of the three vice-presidents and 23 members of the CWC at the 2013 party election.
Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman had in a February 4 statement, agreed to MIC holding fresh party elections as a means to resolve the party crises and to wait for the RoS to submit its approval for party polls.
