GEORGE TOWN: Better security and the frequency of rubbish collection are among the grievances of residents at the People's Housing Project (PPR) in Taman Manggis here.
Single mother Fatimah Zahra Abdul Rahim, 51, said she had not seen any security guards despite having a security post since moving into her unit in 2009.
"Having 24-hour security should be a good move to provide a sense of belonging and safety," she told theSun recently, adding on that the experience of staying in the PPR was satisfactory on the whole.
Security guard S. Yogeswari 46, echoed her sentiments and urged called for more regular rubbish collection.
She was nonetheless grateful to be able to secure a unit in such a convenient area near the town which provided additional facilities to run errands when needed.
"I hope there will be additional infrastructure improvements in the future like additional lighting," she said.
Retired airman Mohd Sobri Osman echoed similar remarks but added what irked him the most was the attitude and behaviour of some residents.
He said these included those who did not take care of their surroundings and treated the area like a personal rubbish bin.
"These people are irresponsible by throwing rubbish as they like. Sometimes the fault lies with the people and not with the administration," he noted when approached by theSun, adding that he's been residing here since 2006.
State Housing Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo told theSun the well-being of PPR residents was a priority for the administration.
He said his office would look into all complaints or suggestions to address any issues which arise.
"I will direct my officers to address these matters urgently," he said.
Penang has 2,941 PPR units with these located at Taman Manggis, two blocks in Jalan Padang Tembak, Taman Desa Wawasan at Central Seberang Perai and another two in Taman Bagan Jaya and Ampang Jajar, North Seberang Perai.
