GEORGE TOWN: Police have detained a 38-year-old man in connection with the attempted murder involving a mother and son in Bukit Mertajam yesterday.
Acting on a tip-off, Penang CID chief SAC Datuk Mazlan Kesah said the man was picked up at his house in the Central Seberang Prai district at 12.15am. Police also seized a samurai sword during the raid.
He said no firearms were found when the raiding team searched the house.
The suspect had previous criminal records for drug related offences while checks were being done to see if he is connected to any triad, he added.
"Police are still searching for three others," he said in a press conference today after attending a rank conferment ceremony.
During the 12.40pm incident, a 43-year-old woman and her 21-year-old son were shot at several times by two gunmen at a traffic light junction at Jalan Song Ban Kheng in Butterworth.
Both were on their way home after attending a drug trial which involved the husband of the woman who was killed last year during a molotov cocktail attack.
The victims are currently reported to be in stable condition at the Seberang Jaya Hospital with police investigating the case for attempted murder under the Penal Code.
