Countractor jailed for using counterfeit currency notes

KUALA LUMPUR: A contractor was sentenced to seven months' jail by the Sessions Court here today for using counterfeit currency notes to pay for purchase of used clothing.
Judge Norsharidah Awang handed down the sentence on Mohd Ismail Abd Kadir, 32, who changed his plea to guilty when the charge was read to him for the second time last Monday and today was set for sentencing.
He was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of arrest, which was last Jan 17.
Mohd Ismail was charged with using as genuine two pieces of counterfeit RM100 currency notes to pay for his purchase of a jacket and trouser at a bundle shop in Downtown Cheras here at 12.15am last Jan 17.
The charge, under Section 489 B of the Penal Code, provides a maximum imprisonment for 20 years, and is liable to a fine, upon conviction.
In mitigation, Mohd Ismail, who was unrepresented, said he was remorse and admitted to producing the counterfeit currency himself after learning the technique from a friend.
