Johor PKR leaders under investigation
JOHOR BARU: Three leaders from Johor Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) have been summoned by police to have their statements recorded for alleged offences under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
Johor PKR chief Hassan Karim told a press conference here that he and Pagoh division chief Saadon Abdullah were called up by police over a solidarity ceramah in Pagoh on Feb 22.
"Johor PKR deputy president Jimmy Puah Wee Tse was also called up by Seri Alam police for an alleged offence under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act," he added.
Hassan said the Court of Appeal in a landmark ruling on April 25, declared Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act unconstitutional and acquitted PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad for an alleged violation of the act.
He said Selangor police had already stopped using that particular section in their investigations and urged Johor police to follow suit. The gathering in Seri Alam was not a PKR function, as it was organised by a non-governmental organisation.
Johor PKR legal bureau chief Andrew Pereira said the conduct of police in the matter could be deemed as harassment of opposition party leaders.
