JAKARTA: An Indonesian sports apparel company has apologised after it was criticised for printing washing instructions considered sexist.
Washing instructions on jerseys produced by Salvo Sports Apparel for the Pusamania Borneo football club read: "Give this jersey to your woman. It's her job."
Pusamania was promoted to the top flight of the Indonesian Super League this year.
Photos of the label made the rounds on the internet on International Women's Day on Sunday and immediately drew condemnation.
"A real man boycotts Salvo Sports," said a Twitter user who goes by the username @martoart.
The company said it wanted to "apologise profusely for the different interpretations" of the message in a series of Twitter posts.
"We have no intention whatsoever to demean women," Salvo said.
"On the contrary [we want men to] learn about clothing care from women because they are more meticulous."
"Not all men are capable of taking care of their own clothes while women are experts in that department."
The company's attempt at explaining the message did not help sooth the anger.
"Salvo_ID's serial tweets confirm its stupidity and sexistness," Twitter user Carolina Rumuat said. – dpa
