KUALA LUMPUR: In a bid to save the MIC from being de-registered, the 2009 interim CWC named former party secretary general, D. P. Vijandran, to head the election committee, which is the body responsible for conducting fresh elections as directed by the Home Ministry and RoS.
MIC deputy president, Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, who chaired the CWC meeting earlier said, the decision to name Vijandran came after discussions with several MIC veterans here, today.
"As ordered by the Registrar of Societies (RoS), the CWC meeting was held today and the committee decided to name D. P. Vijandran to form and lead the election committee.
"We made this decision after discussing with several MIC veterans," he said.
According to Subramaniam, an official letter is to be sent to Vijandran with hopes he would accept the CWC offer.
"An official letter will be sent to Vijandran today, to which the interim CWC hopes that he would accept the offer.
"On the election committee, the members can be only named after Vijandran's appointment," he added.
Subramaniam also said a team of legal experts and veteran politicians will monitor and formulate procedures to conduct the fresh elections as the MIC is relatively inexperienced in this regard.
"The group will formulate the mechanism and later forward the procedures to the interim CWC, election committee and grassroot members.
"The date of election will be announced then," Subramaniam said.
The Segamat MP also said that the interim 2009 CWC had received complaints from several members, that branches that had been defunct, have now suddenly become active.
"So far, we discovered one case in Puchong, and to avoid this happening nationwide, the CWC decided to appoint Datuk S. S. Rajagopal, who is a 2009 interim CWC member, to monitor these situations and facilitate the administration in MIC headquarters," he said.
On Feb 6, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Home Ministry and RoS decided to direct the party to follow the instructions as stated in the Societies Act 1966 Section 3A to hold fresh elections for all office bearers.
