USM student killed in Aceh accident to be laid to rest

BAYAN LEPAS: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) final-year student Muhammad Izzamir Nabihan Abdul Majid who was killed in an accident in Aceh, Indonesia will be buried after Friday prayers today.
The body of the 23-year-old final year minerals engineering student will be laid to rest at the Jamiul al Badawi Mosque in Kepala Batas.
His body arrived at the Penang International Airport at about 10.15am and was attended to by relatives with USM vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Omar Osman and university officials in attendance.
Family members at the airport's cargo complex, comprising an uncle, aunt and his 17-year-old brother were too distraught to speak to the media then.
Izzamir was in Indonesia since Sunday on a study tour with 25 other students and faculty staff.
He and the group were on the way back after visiting a coal mine when the bus they were in overturned after trying to avoid a car from the opposite direction.
Izzamir was the only fatality during the 7pm (8pm Malaysian time) incident while seven others sustained injuries with the rest escaping unscathed.
On the other members, Omar said they are expected to arrive in Penang on a 3pm flight today.
He said USM has set up a medical screening centre at the airport to conduct health checks and to provide counselling services.
"Ambulances are on standby and will take them to the hospital if need be," he added when met at the cargo complex.
