SUBANG JAYA: The public will soon have more reason to use public transportation as Prasarana Malaysia Berhad's "Bus Rapid Transit" (BRT) line in Sunway is scheduled to commence operation in June.
Prasarana Group managing director Azmi Abdul Aziz said the project is a cooperative effort between Prasarana and property conglomerate, Sunway Group Berhad.
"The line will provide integrated transport access to Bandar Sunway and USJ's residents, over half million strong," he said.
Azmi added that 30,000 tertiary students and over 36 million annual visitors and tourists to Sunway's Integrated Resort City would also benefit from the connectivity.
"Presently only 20% of the public uses public transportation regularly. In line with the government's aspirations, we hope that this will have increased to 40% by 2030," he said.
With an investment of RM634 million, the project has begun to pay off as BRT-Sunway is close to becoming a world-class amenity, based on the requirements of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP).
"ITDP works to cut greenhouse gas emissions, reduce poverty and improve urban life quality through efficient transport solutions," Azmi said.
He added that based on its bus rapid transit standards, the project is several points from attaining gold status.
In addition, he also highlighted the use of electric-powered buses for BRT-Sunway and extra bicycle racks at its seven stations as part of efforts to encourage eco-friendliness and use of public transport.
