SHAH ALAM: The appointment of contractors without credibility and the lack of monitoring are among the reasons for the weaknesses in the management of garbage, solid waste and public cleanliness in Selangor.
The Selangor state exco for local authorities (PBT), Dr Idris Ahmad said the issue of garbage not being collected according to schedule and clogged drains was mostly due to the weaknesses of contractors appointed to provide adequate machinery and workers.
"The PBT as the agency responsible must play a more active role to overcome this matter which was among the reasons for the significant rise in the number of dengue cases in Selangor," he told reporters at the lobby of the Selangor state legislative assembly, here today.
Also present were the assemblyman for Selat Klang, Dr Halimah Ali and the assemblyman for Bukit Gasing, Rajiv Rishyakaran.
The media reported that up to March 7, the Health Ministry found that Selangor recorded the largest localities of active dengue cases with 229 areas, followed by Perak (37), Sabah (three) and Penang and Pahang (one each).
Idris, who is also the assemblyman for Ijok, said the committee also found that the quality of roads in the state was low compared to the other states. – Bernama
