KUALA LUMPUR: A company and two Umno division chiefs in Penang are suing Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and two online news portals, The Malaysian Insider and Malaysiakini, over defamatory articles on the alleged sale of Malay lands for profit.
Maison Heights Sdn Bhd; Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir, who is Bukit Mertajam Umno division chief, and Datuk Omar Faudzar, who is Bukit Gelugor Umno division chief, filed the civil suit last Jan 30.
They named Lim, TMI Dot Com Sdn Bhd, which owns and publishes, The Malaysian Insider and its editor Jahabar Sadiq, Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd, which owns and publishes www.malaysiakini.com and its editor, Steven Gan as the defendants.
The matter is fixed for case management on April 2.
In the statement of claim, the plaintiffs referred to an article written by Lim titled "Pembohongan Umno" (Umno’s lies), which was published in The Malaysian Insider on Nov 27, 2014, and another article titled "Stop spreading lies about Penang government, Guan Eng tells Umno” which was also published in the same news portal on Nov 27.
The plaintiffs stated that Lim, Mkini and Gan had caused the publication of another article “Umno made profits by selling Malay Kampungs”, containing defamatory words in Malaysiakini.
They are seeking an injunction to prevent the defendants from uttering or publishing the defamatory words or any other defamatory words against them, through print media or verbally or through Internet, as well as general, aggravated and exemplary damages.
