Minister urges private sector to use disabled-friendly products

BANGI: The private sector should consider Universal Design Products (UDP) to help make lives better and easier for the disabled community.
Deputy Minister of the Women, Family and Community Development ministry (KPWKM), Datuk Azizah Mohd Don said UDPs are but one of many ways in which they can transform the lives of disabled persons via social innovation which in turn produced a more inclusive society.
She said an inclusive society would enable the disabled to lead productive and independent lives filled with self-esteem.
"The showcase displays everyday products such as home appliances, office tools and outdoor items — all of which can be used to the greatest extent by people of all ages, sizes and varying abilities," she said at the Universal Design Products Showcase at the Industrial Training and Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled here today.
She said the showcase was the result of a collaborative effort between KPWKM and the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Technology (Mosti).
Mosti minister Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin agreed there is a need for products that are disabled-friendly.
"UDPs aren't just for the disabled, but can also be used by senior citizens and young children without much difficulty."
Citing statistics, Ewon observed that senior citizens, the disabled, and young children comprise approximately 4.8%, 15%, and 32% of the national population, respectively.
"Regarding the disabled, when one looks at the numerous products on the market, less than 10% are suited to their needs," adding that they too have the right to enjoy what everyone else does.
"Our industries should consider investing in UDPs as a worthy area to pursue, seeing as it can grow into a market with great potential," said Ewon expressing hope that they would regard it seriously in the coming future.
