GEORGE TOWN: Opposition leaders today conveyed their condolences to the family of late Lee Kuan Yew.
PAS deputy commissioner Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said Lee was a prominent figure not just in Singapore but also in Malaysia and the region.
"Its a great loss to country, this region and also the world. He was a great leader who has transformed Singapore to a developed country", he said.
PKR president Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, in her condolence message, likened Lee to Malaysia's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, as both struggled for the independence of Malaya and Singapore from the British.
"We must take stock of his efforts in administering Singapore, which focused on the welfare of the people regardless of race or religion.
"As the founder and first Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee initiated developmental policies that were transparent and efficient, and was successful at attracting foreign investors to the point that his country was dubbed the 'Swiss of Asia'."
She also expressed hope that close ties established between South-East Asian countries and Singapore, which were initiated during Lee's time, could be strengthened.
PKR deputy youth chief Dr Afif Bahardin said Lee's passing is indeed a great loss but in remembering the great leader, Malaysian must look back to his policy that had helped Singapore be what it is today.
"The leadership of Lee is an exemplary to the younger generation of Malaysia", he said.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's political-secretary Wong Hon Wai said Lee has left behind a great legacy not only to the Singaporean but also to other nations.
"He has transformed Singapore from a mere red dot to a successful city state," he said.
Even businessmen, like Leow Seok Kok, 68, and Ahamad Rosli, 58, felt that the Republic had lost a leader who had the people in mind when building the republic.
