Sarawak DAP quits PR Sarawak

KUCHING: Sarawak DAP today announced it was quitting the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition pact in the state with immediate effect.
Its chairman, Chong Chieng Jen, said the unanimous decision was made because PR partner PAS had deviated from the PR common policy framework by pursuing the implementation of hudud law in Malaysia. The third partner in PR is PKR.
"Therefore, so long as the implementation of hudud law remains the political agenda and aim of PAS, Sarawak DAP can no longer work with PAS as a political party in Sarawak.
"As such, with PAS remaining as a component party of PR Sarawak, Sarawak DAP today resolved and made the painful decision to quit PR Sarawak," he said after chairing a meeting of the Sarawak DAP state committee.
Chong, who is Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, said the resolution of Sarawak DAP was a unanimous decision of the state committee and that under the DAP party structure, Sarawak DAP had the autonomy to make such a decision.
Meanwhile, Sarawak PAS said it respected the decision of Sarawak DAP to leave PR Sarawak.

Its information chief, Andri Zulkarnaen Hamden, said he was surprised though over the decision of Sarawak DAP which he described as drastic and a loss.

"Sarawak DAP knows that with the laws and the plural society in Sarawak it will not be possible for the hudud law to be implemented in this state," he said.

He said Sarawak PAS backed the decision of the Kelantan government to implement the hudud law in that state. – Bernama
