Prayer paraphernalia shop destroyed in fire

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A three-storey shop selling prayer paraphernalia was razed in a fire at Jalan Ooh Chooi Cheng at about 10pm last night.
According to a spokesperson from the state Fire and Rescue Department, a distress call was received at 10.55pm.
He said 17 firemen and two fire engines from the Bukit Mertajam, Prai and Perda stations reached the scene at 10.58pm and managed to bring the fire under control in 39 minutes.
The spokesperson added that a total of 86 voluntary firefighters from Cross Street, Lalang, Kepala Batas, Pekan Bukit Mertajam, Juru, Sungai Puyu, Machang Bubuk and Permatang Tinggi assisted in the operation.
"About 80% of the first and second floor of the shop was destroyed in the fire," he said.
He said no one was injured in the incident, while the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
