KUALA LUMPUR: Corruption is a 'cancer' which can destroy the entire community, administrative system and the nation's development.
As such, the relevant parties should join forces to fight corruption in the country, says Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim.
"It (corruption) must be weeded out, once and for all. There will be no corruption if there is no 'giver' or 'receiver' as each has its own agenda in terms of profit, interests, monetary and material gains that may violate ethics and rules.
"However, the people will always put the blame on civil servants, especially in issues involving corruption.
"Although only a handful of civil servants are involved in such immoral activities, it has damaged the good name of the entire organisation," he said in his speech at the Walkathon Programme themed 'Corruption Destroys', in conjunction with the 208th Police Day celebration here today.
Noor Rashid said to curb corruption, the police worked together with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to share information and increase the level of integrity among police personnel.
According to the Transparency International Index last year, he said Malaysia improved its position in the Corruption Perception Index 2014 and ranked 50th out of 175 countries, while in 2013 it was ranked 53rd out of 177 countries.
"While there was improvement compared to the previous years, we still need to improve the ranking," he added.
Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director, Datuk Zubaidah Md Ismail said today's event was aimed at bringing awareness to the public not to bribe policemen.
"When we don't take, you don't give. It is also an initiative for a healthy lifestyle. This time, we also bring in the trainees, so that the awareness begins at the training level," she said. – Bernama
