KUALA LUMPUR: Despite speculation that it may leave Pakatan Rakyat, PAS today confirmed that it will stay in the opposition coalition.
Its deputy president Mohamad Sabu said Pas will continue to stay in Pakatan and dismissed speculations that the party could make an exit.
"We never discussed the possibility of leaving Pakatan in this meeting,we will remain with Pakatan," Mohamad, or Mat Sabu as he is better known, said at a press conference after the party's central committee meeting at its headquarters here.
Also present was PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Ali and deputy secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan.
Speculation on PAS' exit from Pakatan started after DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said PAS' push to implement the Islamic penal code, hudud, was no longer just a religious or political issue but a matter of trust and honesty among Pakatan members.
On March 19, the Kelantan Legislative Assembly had passed a bill that provides for the application of the hudud laws on Muslims upon its implementation.
Hadi meanwhile appealed for all Muslim MPs from any party to support the Private Member Bill on hudud that will be submitted by him at Parliament before April 9.
