KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Insider's (TMI) publisher Ho Kay Tat and chief executive officer Jahabar Sadiq who were detained over a news report on hudud were released today.
Kuala Lumpur police CID chief SAC Zainuddin Ahmad said no remand order was sought on Ho and Jahabar who were freed on police bail at 10.30am today, a day after they were detained at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.
Both Ho and Jahabar told reporters waiting outside the police headquarters that investigators recorded their statements and that they were treated well during their brief detention.
"We have to thank the police officers for being very kind to us, but we still do not know why we were held under the Sedition Act, but I am sure we will find out someday," Jahabar said.
On Tuesday, TMI's managing editor Lionel Morais and two other editors – Zulkifli Sulong and Amin Shah Iskandar were released on police bail after magistrate Nazri Omran denied a remand application by investigators.
The three newsmen were held on Monday evening after police raided their office at Mutiara Damansara.
All five newsmen are being probed over a March 25 report published on TMI, claiming the Conference of Rulers had opposed an amendment of the Federal Constitution to enable hudud laws to be implemented.
The Keeper of the Rulers' Seal lodged a police report on Thursday to deny that the Conference of Rulers had discussed the matter.
In a separate case, an activist of Jingga 13, a non-governmental organisation aligned to Parti Keadilan Rakyat was arrested at his house in Banting for allegedly posting a threat on Twitter directed to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar on Tuesday.
Zainuddin said Irwan Yahya was arrested at 1.30am today and is in police custody under a two-day remand order.
He said Irwan is being investigated for posting a threat and criminal intimidation under the Penal Code.
The activist had on Tuesday tweeted to Khalid in Bahasa Malaysia saying -" Let the IGP detain all of Pakatan Rakyat's senior leaders.. so it will be easy for us to teach the IGP in the youth's way without prohibitions...IGP...be prepared."
Khalid responded to the tweet saying - "Police are only carrying out our duties for public order and and the wellbeing of the people. It is unpleasant to threaten me."
